A very local champagne!
Champagne is like a magic elixir... George Sand
The Aisne enjoys a long tradition of winegrowing and boasts 2,600 hectares of vineyards - 10% of the entire Champagne producing wine area, hence 10% of world production of Champagne. The Aisne ‘terroir’ is divided into many small plots and lacks any overall structure. This means that there are no major wine estates as on the Montagne de Reims or the Côte des Blancs, rather a large number of small family farms.
Nestling at the heart of the Marne valley, the town of Château-Thierry has superb views of the sloping Champagne vineyards dotted with delightful winegrowing villages. This region is particularly successful when it comes to cuvée blending, thus producing a supple, fruity wine which owes much to the dominant grape variety used: Pinot Meunier.
This previously unknown winegrowing area is well on the way to achieving the recognition it deserves. Its winegrowers work tirelessly to produce Champagne of such high quality that it can bear comparison with the most prestigious labels.
To find out more about this sparkling world and meet some of our winegrowers, nothing could be simpler! Just follow the signs displayed along the Champagne Tourist Route and stop at one that takes your fancy! They are happy to welcome tourists and interested visitors, all year round, and you can expect a warm, friendly welcome. Explore the vineyard, tour the cellar, be introduced to Champagne tasting … just go along and they will share with you the secrets of their wonderful profession!
If you are lucky enough to be in the Champagne area in September and October, you might have the chance to take part in the celebrations that take place in each village at the end of the grape harvest!
