Petits fours, Champagne, foie gras, chocolates… it’s impossible not to over-indulge at this time of year! And you don’t really want to miss out on so many delicious treats. But how can you avoid a bulging waistline come the month of January? The answer is to get some exercise!
Our ideas to stay in shape during the Christmas holidays Florence Tabart
To begin with there are a number of fitness trails in the area. La Frette water-sports centre, the Val de Serre at Montcornet and Rozoy, Center Parcs at Ailette Lake, the Eyssartier leisure centre and the water-sports centre at Monampteuil all stay open over Christmas and New Year.
Stair-steppers, trampolines, abdominal benches, hang boards, etc. - the choice is yours in the different workout rooms. Most of the fitness centres offer different levels of difficulty, from sports training to gentle family exercise.
If you fancy it you can, of course, go to Saint-Quentin, strap on your skates and take a turn on the ice-rink before doing a little shopping at the Christmas market.
Keen walkers might want to take up a whole new pastime: Geocaching. This activity, involving a kind of treasure hunt using your GPS system, is taking off all over France. To date there are about forty different “hidden mysteries” in the country. To find out more, go to the www.randonner.fr website.
Finally – not so much fun but just as effective – why not run up the 370 steps that lead to the upper town in Laon? Once you get to top the view is spectacular. If the climb doesn’t wear you out entirely, the Tourist Office organises tours to the top of the cathedral towers (more steps!).
After all this effort, you need some pampering! Try out the sauna or hammam in the fitness centre at the Ile de France hotel in Château-Thierry or the Dôme hotel in Laon.
The Aisne Tourist Board wishes you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
