From Château-Thierry to Condé-en-Brie, through the Champagne vineyards of the Marne valley, you can follow in the footsteps of the fable writer, Jean de La Fontaine. The 16th century Château-Thierry town house in which he was born is now dedicated to his life and works. You will find a host of engravings, drawings, paintings and objets d’art illustrating his famous fables. You can also see the writer’s study, much as it was when he worked in the area as ‘Maître des Eaux et Forêts’.
At Condé-en-Brie, on the Champagne Tourist Route, a truly splendid residence stands in grounds planted with three hundred year old trees. It is the Château of Condé-en-Brie, open to the public. Its rooms were decorated by a number of distinguished artists (Watteau, Oudry, Boucher, etc.) and one of them houses a tribute to a local ‘celebrity’ … none other than La Fontaine!
On the Champagne Tourist Route, La Fontaine des Fables is a Logis de France hotel in the converted buildings of the old railway station of Condé-en-Brie. Each of its 8 rooms is named after a fable by La Fontaine, born just a short distance away, at Château-Thierry. The restaurant, with terrace in summer, serves sophisticated food based on local and regional produce. Friendly, family welcome.
