Soissons abbey is a treasure that houses other treasures… Standing tall above the erstwhile capital of France, it is one of the Middle Age’s richest abbeys. Pause to admire its superb façade, followed by the refectory and the cloister. Venture inside, take the stairs up to the old granaries, and learn about the techniques that were used to build the Gothic vaulted ceilings!
A day in the abbey
Had you lived in the Saint-Jean-des-Vignes abbey in the Middle Ages, what would your vocation have been? Since your earliest childhood, great things were being planned for you! Slip into your cassock and see how it feels to be a monk spending your first hours in the abbey and discovering the monastic life. A role play that is fun and instructive!
Soissons and the Magic Bean
A legend had it that a bean saved the inhabitants of the abbey from famine during the Hundred Years War. Each year, the strange vegetable affectionately known as “Gros jacquot” is duly celebrated. The programme includes a gourmet food market, street acts, a bean hunt, a cookery competition and, above all, the chance to taste local specialities!
