Godin dreamed of an ideal society and embodied this in the “Palais social”, a project on the scale of a classless Versailles. Built in the 19th century in Guise, this housing estate with a difference offered accommodation that was exceptional for its time, as well as allotments, a theatre, schools, a washroom, swimming pool and several pavilions… Godin left no stone unturned as he strove to ensure that his workers had everything they needed.
A stroll through the garden
Ask for the plan of the garden and enjoy a stroll along its pathways. As you pass a vegetable plot, perhaps, look out for the nine enigmas of the Familistère. Ask for the free game at the reception desk.
Labour day festivities at the Familistère
La fête du travail (Labour day), was created at the Godin Familistère in 1867. The tradition has been upheld every year with the popular festivities organised on May 1: fun fair, street acts, and a circus… Plenty to enjoy for people of all ages!
