Live crèche at Coucy

Christmas crèche at Coucy is a unique and magic event!

It’s a magical moment, 45 minutes of pure delight Sandrine Guth

Madame Saingre takes a particularly active part in the life of the village of Coucy-Le-Château. In 1996 she was teaching catechism to local children and managed to persuade the parish priest to organise a live crèche. With official approval for the project there was no holding her back! The AMVCC (Association de la Mise en Valeur du Château de Coucy) agreed to loan costumes and Madame Saingre recruited 40 people from the village and surrounding area to play the characters. Many more people help to prepare and stage the event, including her husband who built a wooden, life-size crib.

Today the live crèche at Coucy has become a real Christmas fixture and, as such, is eagerly anticipated. The audience gathers in the Parc L’Hermitte for 5pm when the spectacle begins with a children’s dance. The Holy family then take their places in the crib, followed by the shepherds, ‘santons’ (traditional figures in a French Christmas crib) and animals. Christmas carols and readings are performed throughout the ceremony. “It’s a magical moment, 45 minutes of pure delight”, says Sandrine Guth who works at the local Tourist Information Office.

If you would like to attend this event or are interested in helping organise it, contact the Coucy Tourist Information Office on +33 (0)3.23.52.44.55.
