The little medieval town of Coucy-le-Château is quite charming. The upper town has ramparts and affords wonderful, panoramic views of the surrounding forest and fields.
It doesn’t take much imagination to see oneself as a noble knight, standing at one of the fortified gateways or looking out from the top of a tower, ready to defend the castle of Coucy whose keep was the tallest in Europe.
"Coucy à la Merveille" is a fantastic medieval spectacular, in honour of the castle’s founder, which takes place in the streets and castle ruins at weekends in July. The town is also the ideal departure point for a number of walks in the forest with its many hidden treasures (abbey, wash house, extraordinary trees).
The 2 star Belle Vue hotel is a charming Logis de France establishment with 8 rooms, located in the upper town near the fortified Laon gate. It has a terrace (open in summer) and private car park. Its restaurant, with traditional décor, offers ‘terroir’ menus based on local and regional produce. Friendly, family welcome.
2 nights in 2 star, 1 ‘cheminée’ standard Logis de France hotel on half-board terms, including drinks - Admission to Coucy castle.
