02200 - SOISSONS

Almost entirely isolated following the destructions from the Revolution to the First World War, in the Middle Ages the cathedral was part of a grouping of the Episcopal and canonical quarters. A contemporary of Notre Dame-de-Chartres, the passage from early gothic architecture to 13th century art is best understood here than anywhere else. Note: across from the remarkable south arm of the transept, a painting by Rubens: The Adoration of the Shepherds.
