VILLERS-COTTERETS
A Renaissance château built by King François I between 1532 and 1540. In August 1539, this is where François I signed the Villers-Cotterêts Edict which enforced the use of French in official acts and cast the foundations of the civil state. A magnificent example of the architectural art of the Renaissance, this imposing site will charm you with its rich interior décor, such as the two straight stairways and their sculpted coffered arches, as well as the royal chapel.
