From the old abbey of Vauclair to the ‘Plateau de Californie’, by way of the museum at the Caverne du Dragon, you will readily understand the strategic importance of this ridge road known as the Chemin des Dames. The highlight of your stay will be a visit to the Caverne du Dragon where you can experience something of the daily life of French soldiers in World War I, not only the ‘Poilus’ but also the ‘Bleuets’ (young men under 20 when they were called up/enlisted). Very close to where you will be staying is a PR footpath (local signposted walk), along which you will literally be walking in the footsteps of these soldiers.
