Leaving from Villers-Cotterêts, birthplace of Alexander Dumas, you are immediately in the forest, famous as the setting for the great rides of the Three Musketeers. Planted with beech, oak, maple and chestnut trees, the forest is divided up geometrically and its paths are well sign-posted, making it very easy to get about.
The 2 day route is split into two 20 km stages. It takes you close to a number of interesting places: the Ourcq canal built at the time of Napoleon, the village of La Ferté Milon (much prized by the Impressionist painters) and the ruins of the Cistercian abbey of Longpont, near which you will spend the night.
A two star, Logis de France hotel, housed in a delightful old residence on the edge of the forest, just a few metres from the ruins of the old Cistercian abbey of Longpont. Very friendly welcome. Garden and terrace.
The restaurant has exposed beams and a lovely stone fireplace. Good, traditional food based on local produce.
